Happy Hearts Preschool Difference

Dear parents, we wanted to thank you all for the great journey we had together during Summer! Welcome back for the school year 2017-2018!

Spearheaded by a successful educational leader in Rwanda, Happy Hearts is an international Montessori school, accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS). Our Preschool offers an unprecedented combination of high-quality education at an accessible cost. What sets us apart from other preschools is that every single aspect of Happy Hearts has been especially designed to maximize the unlocking of each child’s potential. It encourages every student to develop at his or hers own pace within a well-ordered environment where he or she can find all the Montessori materials at children's eyes level.

At our Preschool children learn in a small group allowing for more one-to-one interaction. Our experienced Montessori teachers have exceptional communication skills, emotional intelligence and passion for their job which ensures that your child is effectively nurtured. They are educated to become confident and enthusiastic for self-directed learning !

Moreover, Happy Hearts is proud to be a complete bilingual Daycare, based on English and French. For example, a French speaking teacher will make a presentation using French on Monday, then the English speaking teacher will do it using English on Tuesday. It means that your child will be exposed to both languages at every single moment of the day: the absorbent mind of a child can easily process more than his or her mother tongue, especially if he or she has been immersed in different languages during his or her early childhood. We believe that it's a opportunity given to the students to prepare for a lifetime of language learning.

  • Able to articulate their needs and meet their full learning potential
  • Independent, curious and autonomous.

Daily routine

The daily routine at Happy Hearts Preschool has a set schedule for Montessori work, circle time, outdoor play, lunch, snacks, naps; however there are times when the schedule may be altered in a day depending on the needs of the children and/or weekly based activities (traditional dance, yoga and circus activities).

  • Circle time takes place at 9.00 am. They will greet each other and sing a few songs together in French or English.
  • Montessori classes are between 9:15 am to 10:30 am, then extrq-curricular activities beetween 11.00 am to 12.00 pm. In the afternoon, Montessori classes takes place from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm.
  • Outdoor playtimes are between 7.30 am and 8.50 am, 10.45 am and 11.00 am, 12.30 pm and 13.15 pm, then 4.15 pm and 5.30 pm: the children are free to run and play in the sandpit, the trampoline, the swings, our two bunnies and all the other toys.
  • Healthy snacks are served at 10.30 am and 3.30 pm, lunch at 12:15 pm: after that children clear their table and wash their dishes.
  • Nap time begins at 13:15 pm and finishes at 3:30 pm. Children are left to awaken by themselves, to ensure they get enough rest. Please discuss with the classroom teachers should your child’s nap schedule change. Children who do not nap will work with the Montessori materials in the classroom.

Please always keep in mind that if you can bring your child between 7.30 am and 8.00 am, he or she will have a lot of time to play outside before starting class : it will allow him or her to spend some positive energy with the other students. After what, he or she can focus on Montessori based learning without interrupting or disturbing his or her classmates!

The Happy Hearts curriculum is based on the Montessori philosophy. We have chosen to follow this educational approach because it allows children to learn at their own pace and experience by themselves. It enhances creativity and curiosity as the child will find its own way and then ask teachers for help when needed.

The Montessori preschool classroom is a "living room" for children. Children choose their work from among the self-correcting materials displayed on open shelves, and they work in specific work areas. Over a period of time, the children develop their ability in working with high concentration and few interruptions.

The Preschool includes six main categories of activities:

  • Practical life enhances the development of organization and order.
  • The sensorial area enables the child to classify sensory impressions in relation to length, width, temperature, mass, color, pitch, etc.
  • Mathematics makes use of manipulative materials to enable the child to internalize concepts of number, symbol, sequence, operations, and memorization of basic facts.
  • Basic skills in writing and reading are developed through the use of sandpaper letters, alphabet cut-outs, and various presentations allowing children to link sounds and letter symbols.
  • Cultural activities expose the child to basic geography, history, music, art and life sciences.
  • Activities and games are designed to help support muscle development, coordination and manipulative skills allowing Preschoolers to master basic skills such as walking, running, hopping, jumping, kicking and balancing.

The preschool environment unifies the psycho-social, physical, and academic functioning of the child.

Admission and enrollment

Our academic year 2017-2018 will start on the 4th of September, but we are open for enrollment through the whole year. Kindly note that in order to secure spots for our students from the Daycare, the enrollment are now closed at the Preschool for the school year 2017-2018.

You are welcome to visit us at anytime to learn more about our school, get to know our team and see our beautiful garden. Please contact us to schedule a suitable time. If you like what you see, you fill out the application form, make the adequate payment in the bank and the enrollment of your child can start.

Age Group
As per Montessori teaching approach principles, our children are all studying together in our great open classroom. The age group is from 3 to 5 years old.

We anticipate some children for whom it will be their first time away from parents and we are prepared to make this transition as enjoyable as possible for both child and parent. All children are different, so depending on your child, we will together decide how to give your child the best start at Happy Hearts.

For parents

We invite parents to actively take part in the development of their children. This may be by giving ideas or helping out at special events.

One time per term parents, children and staff get together at a special event, where parents will get the opportunity to experience the work of students, meet each other, ask questions and bring their ideas on board.
We also organize a one-on-one meeting, between a child's parents and his or her teacher, where they will receive a detailed written report about their children’s progress and development.

During the year, we share charming moments at our social media platforms for parents to follow the development of their children. We will also provide a newsletter on a monthly basis.

Calendar and timing

The academic year starts in September and our Preschool will be closed on Rwandan public holidays. The exact calendar can be found at our offices.
In the summer holiday, we arrange holiday camps for children at our Preschool. These will be less focused on curriculum, but include fun activities such as games, painting, taking care of our vegetables garden, playing music, baking and so on!
